Physical Cultural Studies
The Department of Kinesiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland- College Park (www.sph.umd.edu/KNES/) is seeking a tenure track faculty member (Assistant/Associate Professor rank) in the area of Physical Cultural Studies (www.umdpcs.org). Applications are encouraged from those whose research and teaching interests focus on qualitative methods as they inform critical and theoretical analyses of one or more dimensions of physical culture (i.e. exercise, fitness, health, dance, movement, and sport related practices and bodies). Preference will be given to those with research experience and expertise in ethnographic fieldwork focused on the relationship between physical culture, health, and the lived experience of specific populations (i.e. social-class, ethnic, age, gender, sexuality, and/or ability-based groupings).
Qualifications: Doctorate in Kinesiology, Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, or related field, evidence of a sustainable and focused research program, evidence of a productive publication history, and potential to attract extramural funding. The candidate’s research should be consistent with the goals of a department of Kinesiology and a School of Public Health.
Responsibilities: Develop and maintain a nationally recognized program of original research, involving research collaborations with current faculty. Seek to secure external funding for research program. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise that complement existing curricular offerings.
Salary and appointment date: A 9-month salary-supported tenure-track position at the assistant/associate level with pay and benefits commensurate with experience. Start-up funds appropriate to research program are available.
Academic Environment: The Department of Kinesiology is one of six academic units of the fully accredited School of Public Health that also includes the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health, the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Department of Family Science, the Department of Health Services Administration including the Center on aging, and the Department of Public and Community Health. The School is the site of a newly funded CDC Prevention Research Center focusing on health disparities in the National Capital Border region. The academic departments offer course work, practical experiences, and research opportunities leading to Bachelor of Science degrees, a variety of Master’s degrees including the Masters in Public Health degree, and Ph.D. degrees. The School is located in a majority minority county (the 9th largest African American population in the US) with wide economic diversity (most affluent majority African American County in the US), and large Hispanic and immigrant populations in the metropolitan area.
The University of Maryland is a Research Intensive University. College Park is the flagship campus of the University of Maryland System with over 2,500 faculty, 25,000 undergraduate students and 10,000 graduate students. The campus is ideally situated on a metro line that serves the Washington, DC area and is in close proximity to many federal institutes/agencies and departments including DHHS (NIH, FDA, CDC/NCHS), and USDA.
